While gender inequality and discrimination are the root causes of all
forms of GBV. Various other factors will influence the type and extend of GBV
in each setting.

Acts of GBV can be grouped into four general categories:

• Sexual abuse
• Physical abuse
• Emotional and psychological abuse
• Economic abuse

The root causes are a society’s attitude
and practices of gender discrimination. This usually places women and men in
strict roles of power, with women in a lower position compared to men. Accepted
gender roles and the lack of social and economic value for women and their work
strengthen the idea that men have decision-making power and control over women.
